DOJ announces sweeping changes to gun regulations as Biden-era rule faces repeal

This dramatic shift in firearm policy has drawn sharp criticism from gun control activists, who condemned the actions as dangerous and irresponsible. Their outcry comes just days after authorities reported an individual, armed with guns and knives, allegedly attempted to storm the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner with intentions to harm the Republican president.

Among more than 30 proposed changes announced Wednesday is the planned repeal of a 2024 Biden administration rule. This regulation aimed to compel thousands more firearms dealers across the U.S. to conduct background checks for buyers at gun shows and other non-traditional sales locations.

The Biden-era rule was designed to close what is commonly known as the "gun show loophole," a provision that allowed unlicensed dealers to sell firearms without performing background checks, thereby failing to ensure buyers were legally permitted to own a weapon.

Gun rights groups and Republican-led states had challenged the rule in court, arguing it violated the Second Amendment and that Biden didn't have the authority to implement it.

Acting Attorney GeneralTodd Blanchecalled the slate of revisions the “most comprehensive regulatory reform package in the history" of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Blanche said the changes bring gun regulations in line withSupreme Courtprecedent while cutting down on unnecessary burdens on firearms sellers and lawful gun owners.

“For too long, regulations were written without any real understanding of how firearms businesses operate, how lawful gun owners handle their firearms, or what truly improves public safety,” Blanche said.

Gun control groups accused the administration of catering to gun rights activists with loosened regulations they said would make the country less safe.

“Four days after the nation watched gunfire break out at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, the Trump administration’s answer is to gut commonsense gun safety laws and sabotage the only federal agency dedicated to keeping guns out of criminal hands,” John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, said in a statement.

The changes were signed shortly after Robert Cekada, a longtime law enforcement officer, was confirmed by the U.S. Senate to lead the ATF, the federal agency responsible for enforcing the country's gun laws. Cekada, who joined the ATF in 2005, has been been running the day-to-day operations of the agency for the last year as its deputy director.

Cekada is only the third person to be confirmed to lead the agency since the director’s position was made confirmable in 2006. The agency has mostly been led by acting directors, with both Republican and Democratic administrations failing to get nominees for the ATF position through the politically fraught process.

The ATF has long been the target of conservatives for its role in role in gun regulation, but Trump's Justice Department has touted the agency's role in taking illegal guns off the street and stopping violent crime.

“Rob is exactly the right person to lead the ATF at this moment,” Blanche said.

Earlier this week,The New York Timespublished a 30-minute interview with Swift, where she spoke extensively about her songwriting. She discussed shifting away from writing songs full of unsaid feelings about people in her life, particularly onFolklorewhere her songs had fictional subjects.

“I can only speak to me but as I’ve grown up, the intensity of the sort of no-pun-intended ‘message in a bottle’ nature of my songwriting has shifted and changed into something else,” she said. “It used to be like, ‘I can’t tell a person how I feel so I’ll write it in this song.’ And that was really important for me at the time that it was important for me. It’s also important when you’re in your early 20s, and there’s someone you shouldn’t talk to and you don’t want to call them because they’re bad for you and it’s toxic. So you just—you write it in the song, and that’s where it lives, like almost as a method of self-control or self-preservation or something. But for theFolklorealbum and everything like that…it wasn’t as a response to having a public life and the intrusions that come with that. It was really more of just wanting to challenge myself as a writer.”

  • The message, however, was actually a simple communication meant for the director's wife, Kate Capshaw

  • O'Connor costars with Emily Blunt, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson and Colman Domingo in Disclosure Day, in theaters June 12

Steven SpielberggaveJosh O'Connora great anecdote to share after accidentally texting the actor a message meant for his wife,Kate Capshaw, one night during the production of their new movie.

O'Connor, 35, leads Spielberg's new science fiction movie,Disclosure Day,which hits theaters June 12. The actor told theAssociated Pressin an interview published Wednesday, April 29 that he has, "in my opinion, the greatest Steven Spielberg story" to share with reporters, when asked to share something about his experience working with the legendary filmmaker.

"When it happened, I was sort of like punching the air for this very reason, knowing that when it comes to doing press for this film, I can tell the story," O'Connor said. "Which is that I was halfway through the shoot and we had a scene coming up, which is quite an emotional scene and I was struggling with it. I was in my hotel room trying to prep it, as Steven does so brilliantly, and it's extraordinary he's so available to talk about these things."

O'Connor said that he and Spielberg, 79, discussed the scene and how it should play in the movie that day. "I felt quite satisfied, but not completely with it. And then I got a text from him quite late at night, just saying, 'The door is on the latch, just push,' " he continued. "And it made so much sense. I was like, 'Of course.' The character's kind of got all this emotion, it's built up and it's like a door on the latch and you just push and it all comes out and it's an emotional release. I was so thrilled with that note and I came in the next day and said, 'Steven, you totally unlocked it for me, that was amazing.' And he was like, 'What are you talking about?' "

When O'Connor told Spielberg he found the text message the director sent helped him with his preparation for the scene, he recalled that Spielberg simply "laughed and said that that text was supposed to be for his wife."

"It became a very big joke for all of us. But it did unlock the scene for me, so, fair play," the actor added.

Spielberg has been married to Capshaw, 72, since 1991. The couplesharefour adult children together — Sasha, Sawyer, Mikaela and Destry — in addition to Kate's own children, Kate and Theo, whom Spielberg considers himself a father to as well. The iconic director stated during a panel conversation at the 2026 SXSW Conference and Festival in Austin in March that he feels his directing career has "taken second position to my parenting" and his life with family in the last 20 years. (Even so, Spielberg has directed 13 movies since 2005, includingDisclosure Day.)

O'Connor costars inDisclosure Daywith Emily Blunt, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson and Colman Domingo, among others. While not much information about the movie has been made available prior to its release on June 12, the movie appears to follow O'Connor's character as he gains information about the existence of alien life on Earth.

According to the AP, O'Connor portrays a cybersecurity expert, Daniel, who has a "mysterious connection" with Blunt's character, a meteorologist. "Daniel's got some special powers. I'm resistant to saying that because I think it sort of overplays him in some ways," O'Connor told the outlet. "He and Emily's character have this special bond between them and they're not even aware of it. And the film really is pulling these two characters together. That's sort of like the drive for these two, even if they're unaware of it for half the movie."

Speaking with PEOPLE ahead of his induction into the Musicians Hall of Fame in Nashville on Tuesday, April 28, Urban says, "This recordFlow Statewas just an unexpected evolution of music really."

"I bought a studio in Nashville and all I wanted to do was break it in by doing a song or two," he shares. "And we thought just for fun, we would do a couple of yacht rock songs. I had no intention of releasing it. It was just something to do that we really loved playing that kind of music."

What manifested, for Urban, was a cathartic return to music that he resonated with emotionally in his younger years. The album, which is comprised almost wholly of covers spanning yacht rock mainstays, also includes one original Urban song to round the package out. Along for the ride with the four-time Grammy winner are the likes of The Doobie Brothers'Michael McDonald,Little Big TownandJohn Mayer, who serve as the album's only listed features. Production was handled by Urban alongside Dann Huff.

"We all had such a good time in the studio. We said, 'Well, let's do a couple more.' And over the course of four or five months, it went from just a couple of songs to four to seven to 10 to 11 and it just kept growing and became an album, but it was never a conscious decision," Urban tells PEOPLE of his creative process onFlow State.

Looking back at where he was with his craft 10 years ago versus today, Urban recognizes that the path hasn't always been linear, and that his perspectives have mainly been honed through road-worn experience. "I think all of that can only come with time," he reflects. "Less is more."

"It's evolutionary in its expression," he adds. "What it is that a musician has to say at some point is relative to where they're at, what they've been through, and that can only continue to evolve with life experience."

“Leaving Neverland” director blasts Michael Jackson biopic for portraying singer as 'asexual plastic action doll'

Leaving Neverland director Dan Reed criticized the biopic Michael for depicting Michael Jackson as a "asexual plastic action doll."

Key Points

  • The filmmaker said that he "could kind of buy" the film's early scenes that showed Jackson's childhood.

  • The documentarian added that framing Jackson as an "eccentric, overgrown child" is "not the full story."

Leaving Neverlanddirector Dan Reed has watchedMichael— and he doesn't like what he saw.

The documentarian's 2019 film saw Wade Robson and James Safechuck accuseMichael Jacksonof grooming and sexually abusing them as children. Now, Reed has viewed Antoine Fuqua's hit biopic about the "Smooth Criminal" musician, and offered his two cents about the film — which does not address the allegations against the singer — in aninterviewwithVariety.

"The first part of Michael as a child, I could kind of buy that," he said. "But as soon as we go to the adult Jackson, played by his nephew Jaafar, that burst my bubble. I thought, he's a great dancer, but his performance is very wooden, and one of the reasons for that is he didn't have much of a script to work with."

Reed opined thatMichaelfails to accurately depict the late "Thriller" singer or meaningfully explore his psychology. "He becomes this waxwork who performs these jukebox songs, but there's zero insight into what makes Jackson tick," the documentarian said. "He's this asexual plastic action doll of a figure in the film. And of course, the issue of his relationship with children is completely distorted by the fact that they portray him as an eccentric, overgrown child, which we know is not the full story."

Entertainment Weeklyhas reached out to representatives for Jackson's estate and Lionsgate, the studio behindMichael, for comment.

The filmmaker explained why he believes the biopic sought to depict Jackson in this manner.

"To the culture, Jackson is like a religion. So, what I've done [withLeaving Neverland] is essentially blaspheme, and this biopic reinstates the myth," he hypothesized. "As absurd as any religion, people have to believe in the miracle of Jackson being this asexual, pure being who only wished good for little children and helped them. They've given him the attributes of a deity."

Reed also argued thatMichaelfails to contend with the allegations from his documentary, even though he thinks the film was intended to offer a convincing opposing viewpoint.

"The film just flips the truth on its head — black is white, white is black, and two and two make five — and none of the people who go and see the movie will ever question that, but it's a movie that's impossible to take seriously as a counter-narrative toLeaving Neverland," he said. "It was supposed to be the retort toLeaving Neverland, and they tried that in an early script and it fell apart, so they created this jukebox movie but haven't managed to create a plausible narrative that would explain Jackson's fondness for children."

Michaelhas received fairly negative reviews from critics, currently holding a 37% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 39/100 score on the aggregator Metacritic. However, the film was embraced by audiences in its opening weekend, scoring $217.3 millionat the global box office — a record-setting opening weekend for a musical biopic.

UK ‘must take more risks to stay ahead of our enemies’ as Russian ships in British waters soar

The UK must take more risks to “stay ahead of our enemies” asRussian incursions into British waterssoar, the head of theRoyal Navyhas warned.

The Independent US

In a speech in central London, First Sea Lord General Sir Gwyn Jenkins, said that Russian ship sightings have “jumped” by a third in two years andthe UK was forced to responddozens of times last year alone.

In response, he warned the UK had to invest not only in “the technologies of the future” but also have an “entire mindset” shift.

“If we are to stay ahead of our enemies, that requires us to take more risk, to ruthlessly remove unnecessary regulations and other barriers holding us back, so that we can cut the time it takes between trialling new systems and putting them to sea,” he said.

He warned that “things will only accelerate from here. The pace of technological change will never again be as slow as it is today”.

And he said thatrecent events in the Middle East, where Donald Trump’s Iran war led to the blockage of the crucial Strait of Hormuz, had hit home that “the sea and our ability to control it is central to our prosperity, our resilience and our very survival”.

His call comes just weeks after former defence secretaries and Labour grandees threw their weight behind a former Natosecretary generalwho warned that theUK’s securitywas “in peril” as a result of the “corrosive complacency” ofSir Keir Starmer.

George Robertson, a former Labour defence secretary who was appointed by the prime minister to write the government’sStrategic Defence Review (SDR), also accused “non-military experts” in the Treasury of “vandalism” and claimed Sir Keir was unwilling “to make the necessary investment” in Britain’s defence.

The First Sea Lord also announced that the first Navy-wide wargame to test the potential of its new “hybrid” approach was held last month.

In his speech at the Royal United Services Institute defence think tank, Sir Gwyn said: “The wargame provided clear evidence that our hybrid approach will deliver a significant increase in war-fighting capability.

“Our hybrid Navy generated a substantial increase in combat mass as measured by weapons and sensors, whilst also providing added flexibility and tactical choice for commanders.

“Our missile capacity increased threefold to the level necessary to win a contest in the North Atlantic.

“Across all our key missions, be it deterrence, carrier strike groups, amphibious strike groups, or integrated air and missile defence, we saw our readiness to respond improve markedly.”

He also said he was determined to leave the Royal Navy “much stronger than the one I inherited”.

He said: “By the time I depart in 2029, I am determined that the Royal Navy will be much stronger than the one I inherited, a fleet fit for 21st century warfighting.”
