Linda Perry Says She Didn't Think Christina Aguilera Was Right to Sing 'Beautiful' at First: 'No, You're Like, a Hot Chick'

Linda Perry doubted Christina Aguilera was the right fit for her song "Beautiful" — until she heard her sing it

  • "That's when I discovered... 'Oh, beautiful people are actually insecure and just as damaged as I am,'" she said

  • "Beautiful" was featured on Stripped and won a Grammy in 2004

Linda Perrydidn't thinkChristina Aguilerawas the right fit for her song "Beautiful" — but the pop star quickly proved her wrong.

During an appearance on theZach Sang Showon Friday, May 8, Perry opened up about how she felt when Aguilera first sang her song "Beautiful," which was eventually featured on Aguilera's 2002 recordStripped.

Shortly after Perry, 61, wrote "Beautiful," Aguilera, 45, visited her in the studio and she played her a demo of the song.

"She was like, 'Okay I want that.' And I'm thinking in my mind, 'No, you're like, a hot chick. I'm not giving you this song. No way. Are you kidding me?'" Perry recalled.

Then, Perry's manager suggested she let the pop star sing it. When she did, the song took on a whole new meaning for the singer-songwriter.

"It made sense," Perry said. "That's when I discovered... Oh, beautiful people are actually insecure and just as damaged as I am."

She continued, "She's just as f---ed up as I am. Okay. And then it broke the ice between the both of us when I saw that."

Perry said that she then forced Aguilera to keep the demo they recorded because of how raw it was — even after the "Genie in a Bottle" singer begged her to re-record.

"That's the version that sold me [and] made me believe she had emotions. That she was insecure, that she was lacking in confidence in certain places, that she needed acceptance and approval," she said. "I said, 'Christina, what is wonderful about this vocal is you didn't know what you were doing. That's why it's going to be huge, because so many people are going to relate to this imperfect vocal. That's what this song is about. Not being perfect... I think that's an art that needs to come back.'"

In 2004, "Beautiful" won Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the Grammy Awards, and was nominated for Song of the Year. The song also peaked at No. 2 on theBillboardHot 100.

On the 20th anniversary ofStripped, Aguilerareleased an updated music videofor the hit song featuring young children tied to their phones. The pop star didn't appear in the video but she did share a message about the anniversary at the very end.

"In the last 20 years, sinceStrippedwas first released, social media has transformed our relationship with our bodies, and in turn our mental health," the message read. "Research suggests that time spent on social networking sites is associated with body image issues, self-harm and disordered eating in children and teens. This needs to change."

But the barrier to entry is higher than usual, given that the movie is a continuation of aTV showthat has been on for three seasons. 'The Mandalorian,' Season 1

Five years after "Return of the Jedi," a peaceful, democratic government called the New Republic has been established, but there remain holdouts who want to restore the evil Galactic Empire. One of them, former Imperial officer the Client (Werner Herzog), hires Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) to retrieve an asset.

Din is shocked to discoverthe asset is a baby, Grogu. The child is strong in the Force and saves Din by levitating a creature that was about to kill him.

Din initiallybrings Groguto the Client and retrieves his reward, only to have a change of heart. Full of guilt, he breaks back into the Client's base, saves Grogu and flees. In doing so, Din becomes a traitor to his bounty hunter guild, led by Greef Karga (Carl Weathers).

The Mandalorians, who are renowned as the galaxy's fiercest warriors, have lived in the shadows since the Great Purge, an Empire-led massacre on their home world of Mandalore. Din wasn't born on Mandalore but was taken in by the Mandalorians after his parents were killed in the Clone Wars. His sect of Mandalorians follow a strict creed requiring them to never remove their helmets, so Din hasn't shown his face to anyone since he was a child.

In Season 1 of

While on the run, Din and Grogu make new friends, including former Rebel Alliance soldier Cara Dune (Gina Carano). But Greef convinces Din to come back and help him kill the Client. Chaos ensues when the Client is gunned down by his boss, former Imperial Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito), who swoops in demanding Grogu.

Long story short, a showdown ends with Din, Greef, Grogu and Cara escaping. Gideon also survives and is revealed to be in possession of an ancient lightsaber, known as the Darksaber.

'The Mandalorian,' Season 2

In Season 2, Din seeks to reunite Grogu with his own kind by finding a Jedi.

On his quest, he meets other Mandalorians, including Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff), but is horrified that they freely remove their helmets. Bo-Katan explains the Mandalorians who raised Din and taught him to never show his face are religious zealots known as the Children of the Watch, who broke from Mandalorian society. Other Mandalorians, it turns out, take their helmets off whenever they want.

In

Din eventually finds former Jedi Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson), who can read Grogu's thoughts. She reveals Grogu was raised at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant but was hidden when the Empire rose to power and killed most of the Jedi. Ahsoka sends Din to an ancient Jedi temple site, where Grogu can meditate so a Jedi will find him. While he's doing so, Grogu is kidnapped by Gideon's troopers.

So Din launches a rescue mission, and Bo-Katan tags along so she can get the Darksaber from Gideon. She plans to use it to retake Mandalore, as per tradition, whoever wields the weapon can rule the Mandalorians. But the weapon must be won in combat, and Din unintentionally wins it after beating Gideon in a fight. Din tries to simply hand the Darksaber to Bo-Katan, but this isn't an option.

As Gideon's Darktroopers close in, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) arrives to save the day. Din removes his helmet to say goodbye to Grogu, and the child goes off with Luke to train as a Jedi.

'The Book of Boba Fett'

In "The Book of Boba Fett," which is essentially "The Mandalorian" Season 2.5, Din has returned to bounty hunting and reunited with some old Mandalorian allies: The Armorer (Emily Swallow) and Paz Vizsla (Jon Favreau), who are rebuilding a Mandalorian covert. Din reveals he removed his helmet, so the Armorer declares he's no longer a Mandalorian.

Meanwhile, Grogu is still in training, but Luke feels his heart isn't in it. So he gives Grogu a choice: Remain with Luke or cut his training short and abandon the Jedi path by going back to Din. Grogu chooses the latter, and he and Din reunite.

'The Mandalorian,' Season 3

The Mandalorian covert led by the Armorer has grown significantly in Season 3, but Din is still not welcome. The Armorer says that after removing his helmet, he can only be redeemed by bathing in the Living Waters on Mandalore.

So Din heads to the planet, which is not cursed, as had been rumored. He bathes in the Living Waters, but nearly drowns before Bo-Katan saves him. Din is then welcomed back into the covert, and Bo-Katan is welcomed in, too, as she bathed in the waters while saving Din.

Din also reasons that because Bo-Katan, during the rescue, killed a creature that took the Darksaber, she can now claim the weapon. Bo-Katan does so and decides she'll use the Darksaber to unite all the Mandalorian factions, including those who do and don't remove their helmets, and retake Mandalore.

Grogu and Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) were back together again

On the planet, the Mandalorians encounter Gideon, who is revealed to have created clones of himself. He has been after Grogu so he can figure out how to give the clones the ability to wield the Force.

In a final battle, the Darksaber is destroyed, Gideon and his clones are seemingly killed, and the newly united Mandalorians settle back on Mandalore. But a lingering threat remains: a shadow council of Imperial warlords, who are plotting to destroy the New Republic.

As the dust settles, Din adopts Grogu, who is renamed Din Grogu and officially becomes a Mandalorian apprentice. Din also agrees to work for the New Republic as an independent contractor, hunting Imperials on a case-by-case basis. This sets up "The Mandalorian and Grogu" to depict one of these cases, featuringSigourney Weaver, Martin Scorsese and Jeremy Allen White as Jabba the Hutt's shockingly buff son.

How to watch 'The Mandalorian,' previous 'Star Wars' movies before 'Grogu'

"The Mandalorian" and "The Book of Boba Fett" are both available to stream on Disney+. "The Book of Boba Fett" should be watched after Season 2 of "The Mandalorian" but before Season 3, though if you're in a hurry, you can skip the first four episodes of "Fett" and start watching with Chapter 5, when Din first appears.

All 11 live-action "Star Wars" films can also be streamed on Disney+. Given that Din Djarin's story is fairly disconnected from the rest of the galaxy, none of these previous movies are likely to be especially relevant to the new one, save, perhaps, for the animated adventure "Star Wars: The Clone Wars." That 2008 movie introduced Jabba the Hutt's son Rotta, who returns in "Grogu."

Tom Hanks' brother Jim says he's 'immensely grateful' to voice “Toy Story”'s Woody when his big brother isn't available

Tom Hanks' younger brother Jim Hanks opened up about voicing Toy Story's Sheriff Woody across various Disney projects.

Key Points

  • Jim shared he's "immensely grateful" for the opportunity to voice the iconic cowboy character.

  • Tom has voiced Woody across the franchise's feature films, including Toy Story 5, which hits theaters June 19.

Catchphrases like "There's a snake in my boot" and "You're my favorite deputy" come from the one and only Sheriff Woody, the pull-string protagonist of theToy Storyfranchise.

WhileTom Hankshas been the voice of Woody across five films, his nearly identical brother Jim Hanks has also lent his voice talents for the memorable Disney character across a variety ofToy Storymedia — and interestingly has more credits than his brother in voicing the cowboy.

In an interview with theLove it Filmpodcast, Jim explained how he has helped his older brother out over the years by voicing Woody for various supportive projects such as shorts, video games, and even merchandise.

"The first thing I ever did was one of the pull-string toys from the first movie where he's saying 'You're my favorite deputy' and 'There's a snake in my boot' and stuff like that," Jim said on the podcast. "They had processed the voice so much that they needed a cleaner [version] so I come in and do it."

Jim says he has been "immensely grateful" for the opportunity to voice Woody, and makes sure he is "staying as true to the character as possible" when stepping in for his brother.

However, Jim noted there have been opportunities for him to give a little bit of his spin on Woody, such as when he voiced Woody for Disney California Adventure Park's Midway Mania ride. While recording lines with Pixar staff, Jim said he gave the suggestion that when Woody is speaking to little kids on the ride, he talks to them as if he's their "favorite teacher."

"That was really cool," Jim said of Pixar taking his advice, adding that they were "really collaborative" to work with for the ride.

As for how he taps into his brother to voice Woody, Jim joked, "I used to say that my Woody is my impression of Tom yelling at his kids. 'Get down from there!' is the same as 'Buzz!'"

OtherToy Storyprojects where Jim can be heard as Woody include Pixar's 2020 shortLamp Lifeplus Disney's video games likeDreamlight ValleyandKingdom Hearts III.

New York Times sues Pentagon a second time over press access policy

The New York Timessuedthe Defense Department on Monday for the second time in five months, arguing a requirement that journalists beescorted while on Pentagon groundsviolates the First Amendment.

CBS News

The lawsuit casts the escort policy as part of "a series of escalating steps designed to stop unfavorable coverage" and "dramatically curtails longstanding press access to the Pentagon," in violation of the First and Fifth amendments.

The policy is "an unconstitutional attempt by the Pentagon to prevent independent reporting on military affairs," a Times spokesman, Charlie Stadtlander, said in an email to The Associated Press. "As we have said before: Americans deserve visibility into how their government is being run, and the actions the military is taking in their name and with their tax dollars."

On X, Defense Department spokesperson Sean Parnellcalled the Times' latest lawsuit"nothing more than an attempt to remove the barriers to them getting their hands on classified information."

The Times lawsuit is another salvo in the escalating tensions between the U.S. media and the second Trump administration, which has played out both in the public arena and at times in the courts.

The paper filed Monday's lawsuit after first suing the Pentagon in December over a separate set of rules imposed by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth last fall.

The older policy required reporters to sign onto a host of restrictions in order to maintain daily access to the Pentagon, including one that suggested reporters who "solicit" sensitive information from military personnel could be deemed a security risk and expelled from the building. Many news outlets — including CBS News, ABC News, NBC News, CNN and Fox News — declined to sign the policy and wereforced to vacate the Pentagon.

U.S. District Judge Paul L. Friedmanstruck downparts of that policy in March, finding they violated the rights of the newspaper and one of its reporters, Julian Barnes.

The Pentagon responded by imposing a new policy that barred reporters from accessing the building altogether unless they are accompanied by a government escort. The judge ruled that the interim policy violated his March order. But the escort policy remained in place when anappeals court stayedpart of Friedman's ruling while the government appeals. The appeals process is ongoing.

The new lawsuit, filed by the paper and reporter Barnes in District of Columbia district court, aims to get the courts to directly address the escort rule on constitutional grounds.

In the filing, the paper contends the rule, like other Pentagon media restrictions, has a clear aim — "closing the Pentagon to any journalist or news organization unwilling to report only what Department officials approve."

This, it contends, is "patently unconstitutional."

The Pentagon hasdeniedthat it is trying to force journalists to get approval for their stories, and is instead trying to prevent leaks of highly sensitive information.

Parnell, in his X post Monday, asserted that The Times and its journalists "want to roam the halls of the Pentagon freely and without an escort — a privilege that they do not have in any other federal building."

He added: "The Department's policy is completely lawful and narrowly designed to protect national security information from unlawful criminal disclosure."
